We may be new to your home, but we’re not new to cotton and textiles. We’ve been making beddings for high-end hotels and restaurants (all over the world) since the early 80’s. Our new business, Cotton & Calm is focused on home and family beddings, something we’re particularly passionate about. We believe that every home and family deserves the utmost quality without the luxurious price tag! We want to be the reason that when you go home, when you lie down at the end of a day, you are not only in a space of extreme comfort but one of possibility. The number of threads per square inch of fabric is called thread count. With finer threads, more can be woven, and this is how you get higher thread counts. Generally, the higher the thread count, the better quality the fabric is, and it feels better against your skin. The industry considers anything above 200 thread count high quality for cotton bed sheets.
More is not necessarily better in the beddings world. Multi-ply yarns are made from shorter weaker fibers twisted together, which result in coarser sheets that do not last as long. This is why at Cotton & Calm we only use single-ply yarn because it produces the finest, yet lightest and strongest threads. The sheets you get from Single Ply are durable, soft and airy.
Percale, sateen and jersey are all comfortable and easy to take care of. This is why they have been the benchmark for sleeping quality since the invention of the Cotton Gin in the late 18thcentury. The right sheet for you is a realization that often comes with sleeping on a sheet! However here are some characteristics that can help you decide:
Microfiber sheets are made partly or wholly from synthetic materials. This makes them lightweight, soft, easy to clean and wrinkle resistant. This also makes them cheap and popular as a budget option for beddings.
We do not make Microfiber bed sheets because they do not represent our definition of comfort. Microfiber sheets are not breathable which makes them hot and this means summer months can be uncomfortable. They are light and prone to static. They are flammable. They can attract fibers like lint and hair, a problem that can get worse in winter months. They have greater absorbency which means depending on your lifestyle they may have to be washed as often as every week.
In addition, Microfiber sheets have environmental implications. These polymers are made from petroleum and the process to make them releases hazardous fumes. They may also degrade or break down during daily use and laundering. This produces synthetic microfibers. Microfibers do not degrade naturally in the environment like cotton fibers do for example. Research and monitoring has shown that microplastics exist in all of the world’s oceans and can pose be hazardous to the marine ecosystem.
The Cotton & Calm name has always stood for authenticity of materials and comfort and Microfiber beddings do not qualify.
